Montec shell vs insulated jacket – Key differences | Montec Mag

When it comes to staying warm and dry on the mountain, choosing between a shell and an insulated jacket is one of the most important decisions you can make. Insulated jackets feature a built-in layer of insulation. Shell jackets, on the other hand, have no insulation at all. But what are the differences exactly?

Construction & materials

All Montec jackets are built using a multi-layered construction designed to handle mountain conditions. On the outside, you’ll find a durable polyester shell fabric coated with a PFAS-free DWR treatment to repel water and snow. Bonded to the inside of this shell is a 20K-rated polyurethane waterproof membrane that stops moisture from getting through, while still allowing sweat and heat to escape.

On the inside, things differ depending on the type of jacket. Shell jackets use a non-attached inner liner, often called a 2-layer construction, which protects the membrane and makes the jacket more comfortable to wear. In insulated jackets, this same inner liner is combined with a synthetic insulation layer that fills the space between the membrane and lining.

Warmth & layering

Montec’s insulated jackets offer built-in warmth thanks to their integrated layer of Comfortemp insulation. That means you can often get away with wearing just a baselayer underneath, even in colder conditions. It’s a simple and effective setup that keeps bulk to a minimum. However, once you're warm, it can be harder to cool down.

Shell jackets, on the other hand, give you flexibility. You can add or remove layers depending on the conditions, which makes them ideal for changeable weather or more intense riding days. With a good baselayer and a midlayer, you can match the warmth of an insulated jacket, and when the sun comes out, you can drop a layer and stay comfortable.

Technical performance

Both shell and insulated Montec jackets come with the same high-end technical features. They use a 20k/20k waterproof and breathable SHIELD-TEC membrane, which means they’ll keep you dry and comfortable in pretty much any weather. The outer fabric is coated with an eco-friendly DWR treatment to help water bead off, and fully taped seams stop any moisture sneaking in.

You’ll also get all the other features, including underarm vent zips, a snow skirt, wrist gaiters, an adjustable hood, and secure storage. The only difference is the inclusion of Comfortemp synthetic insulation in the insulated jackets which is 60g in the body, and 40g in the sleeves and hood. It’s lightweight, breathable, and traps heat effectively without adding bulk, helping you stay warm without overheating.

Best use cases

Insulated jackets are ideal for cold-weather resort days. They’re great when you want warmth without needing to layer up too much underneath. Just throw it on over your base layer and you’re good to go. If you tend to feel the cold or are heading out in sub-zero temps, an insulated jacket like the Montec Fawk or Dune is a solid choice for a warm all-arounder.

Shell jackets are more versatile overall. They’re perfect for variable conditions, touring, or days when you’re working harder on the mountain. Because they don’t have built-in insulation, you can fine-tune your layering depending on the weather and your riding style. Whether you’re lapping the park in spring, hiking a ridge, or just want to stay cool while carving fast laps, something like the Montec Doom or Arch in shell form gives you total flexibility.

Which jacket should you choose?

In the end, it really comes down to how you ride, where you ride, and what kind of conditions you’re heading into. If you want simplicity, warmth, and don’t plan to layer much, an insulated jacket is a great option. But if you want to adapt your setup to suit changing weather, or you tend to run hot, a shell jacket will give you more control. Both are built with the same bombproof construction and rock-solid weather protection, so whichever you go for, you’ll be ready for anything the mountain throws at you. Most Montec jackets are available in both shell and insulated versions too, so you can pick the perfect design that fits your style and riding needs.
