MONTEC ski vs snowboard gear: Is there actually a difference? | Montec Mag

Here's the short answer: no, there isn't. Every Montec jacket, pant, and bib is built to perform the same way on skis or a snowboard. Same fits, same 20k/20k waterproofing, same shell. Pick the style you like and you're set, whichever sport you ride.

If you want the longer answer, we'll break down fit, tech, and durability below, with a bit of history on why ski and snowboard gear used to look so different in the first place.

Fit and style

The fit's the same for both sports at Montec. We use Slim, Regular, and Relaxed cuts, and every one of them is designed for skiing and snowboarding alike. So pick the shape you like, not the sport. There's a fun story behind why they used to be so distinct, though.

Once upon a time, ski gear was form-fitting, and snowboard gear was baggy. Born from skate and surf culture, baggy clothes were the ultimate badge of rebellion. So, when skaters hit the slopes, they brought that counter-culture vibe to the snowboarding scene. And baggy became big. But as skiers started hitting the park and snowboarders started lapping groomers, the styles blended. Today, there’s hardly any difference at all. Sure, some brands still cater more to one than the other. But, generally, no one can say there’s a clear distinction anymore between ski and snowboard styles.

Technical specifications

Same tech, whatever you ride. Every Montec jacket, pant, and bib hits 20k/20k for waterproofing and breathability, with a bluesign® APPROVED, PFAS-free DWR treatment, recycled polyester insulation, and fully taped seams. Skis or a board, you're getting the same kit underneath.

When snow brands first started using high-end membranes and waterproofing, they only catered to skiing. But as technology moved on and the fabrics, membranes, and methods became more widespread, tech specs increased across the board (pun fully intended).

Can you wear Montec gear to ski and snowboard?

Durability

Same toughness either way. At Montec, our shells are made from woven polyester, which is seriously hard to tear, slice, or scuff, and that's true of every piece we make. Skis or a board, your gear's built to last.

Most ski and snowboard gear is now made from either polyester or nylon: two super-tough synthetic fabrics that have high abrasion and tear resistance. That means that all snow gear should be more than durable enough to take some hits, regardless of whether you’re on a snowboard or skis.

What to look for in your MONTEC setup

Every Montec piece is built for the whole mountain, with skiers and snowboarders both in mind. That means you can pick your kit around the riding you actually do, not the sport. You can browse the matching ski clothing women collection to pick the fit and features that match how you ride.
